Home elevator inspection | Process, costs, and key considerations

07-10-2026

Home elevator inspection is the process of comprehensively assessing and inspecting the elevator system to ensure that the equipment operates safely and complies with technical standards before being put into service or during operation. This is an important step in identifying potential risks early, minimizing incidents, and ensuring the safety of household users.

Why is home elevator inspection necessary?

Inspection is not only a mandatory legal requirement, as elevators are classified as equipment subject to strict occupational safety requirements, but it also provides practical benefits:

  • Early detection and timely correction of potential issues, such as cable wear.
  • Ensured safety for the entire family, especially the elderly and young children.
  • Extended service life of the electromechanical system and optimized long-term maintenance costs.

Inspection validity periods for home elevators

According to current regulations issued by the Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs, the inspection periods for home elevators are as follows:

  • Elevators in service for less than 10 years: Periodic inspection every 3 years.
  • Elevators in service for 10 to 20 years: Periodic inspection every 2 years.
  • Elevators in service for more than 20 years: Periodic inspection every 1 year.

*Note: For newly installed elevators, the initial inspection must be carried out rigorously before the equipment is officially handed over and put into operation.

Standard government inspection process for elevators

Authorized inspectors from the competent authorities conduct a rigorous four-step inspection process:

  • Step 1. Review of technical documentation: Inspectors review the elevator records, including design drawings, installation documents, as-built records, and previous maintenance reports.
  • Step 2. On-site technical inspection: This step involves physical inspection and measurements while the elevator is not operating. The machine room, elevator cabin, pit, and related components are thoroughly inspected.
  • Step 3. Operational testing: Inspectors operate the elevator under both no-load and load conditions, with the load tested up to 125% of the rated capacity, to assess the response of the safety gear and automatic rescue system. This is a critical step in evaluating the actual performance of a home elevator.
  • Step 4. Inspection result processing: If the equipment meets all applicable standards, the inspection body prepares an acceptance record in the presence of the project owner or operator, issues an inspection certificate, and affixes the inspection label to the elevator. If the equipment fails to meet the requirements, the operator must rectify the identified issues before re-inspection. This ensures that the elevator meets the required safety standards before being put back into service.
