Why you should use an elevator safely and politely?

Nowadays, with the development of science and technology, various types of elevators have been created to satisfy the needs for transportation. Other than the overly familiar stairs, we are seeing more and more sights and uses of elevators at schools, hotels, complexes, buildings, in hospitals or even households.

Using an elevator correctly helps you and everyone around you to be safer. It doesn’t only protect you but also shows politeness and civility in oneself.

Let’s learn how to use an elevator correctly, safely and effectively with Viet Chao.

How to use an elevator safely, politely?

Basic signs in an elevator

Before entering an elevator (while calling and waiting for it)

Line up on one side

  • You need to line up and do not push each other to make way for the people inside when the elevator arrives.
  • Confirm the exact floor you wanted to go (up or down) so that you can use the Car operation panel quickly without affecting other people.
  • After that, only press the calling button once (till it lights up), press the upward arrow symbol if you wish to go up and downward if you wish to go down.
  • Pay attention to the landing display panel for the location of the car.
  • It is prohibited to lean against the car door and landing display panel.

When entering the cabin:

  • Pay attention to the direction of the cabin.
  • Pay attention to the floor so that you wouldn’t trip.
  • Going inside one by one, do not push each other and form a single line for the people inside to go out.
  • Walk quickly and refrain from standing near the door. Keep your belongings neat and tight to avoid getting stuck and obstructing the door closing.
  • When the cabin arrives, if it is too crowded inside or there is OL signal or warning, do not persistently try to get in, instead, wait for the following trip.
  • Press and hold the Door Open button to keep the door open for other people but refrain from pressing them too long as it will affect other passengers who want to go to other floors and could cause problems with the elevator. DO NOT use your body parts or belongings to keep the door open because if the sensor performs abnormally, the door will continue closing and cause your body parts to get stuck in between.
  • Press the (►◄) button to close the door if there isn’t anyone outside and you want to move quickly.

Inside the cabin

  • Press the desired floor number immediately after entering the cabin. If it is too crowded, you can ask someone else to do it for you instead. This reduces your contact with the panel which could cause the spreading of germs and viruses through contact, especially in the current situation of the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • You should hold on to the handrail if possible.
  • Refrain from using mobile phone inside the car cabin. Instead, you could resume using them after you exit the elevator. If it is necessary, keep your voice at a moderate volume. Refrain from talking too loudly inside a car cabin.
  • Always pay attention to the display panel to know the location of the cabin.
  • Do not stand too close or lean into the door. Make way for people who want to enter or exit and for the door to operate normally and safely.

When exiting the elevator

  • Wait until the elevator comes to a complete stop to exit it.
  • Exit one by one, do not push or walk too fast in the process.
  • Pay attention to the floor to avoid tripping.

When you are accompanying children

Instruct children on how to use an elevator safely so they can visualize and follow it. The goal is to avoid the situation when the surrounding people are affected by the children’s naughty behavior.

When the elevator has a problem

Intercom & Alarm button

When the elevator encounters an emergency problem, the passenger should stay calm and try to resolve it. Instead of panicking, press Alarm or Intercom to call and inform people outside for support to come as soon as possible. Try not to pry the door open or climb through the door when the elevator is stuck between 2 floors.

Prohibitions/Restriction in elevators

Do NOT smoke/eat/drink inside an elevator

Smoking inside a tight space like a car cabin is prohibited in various places because of its severe impact on people around. Even if it isn’t completely prohibited, you can always wait until you exit the elevator to continue smoking since a trip only lasts 1-2 minutes.

Eating and drinking inside an elevator are also considered to be impolite, especially with public elevators. Imagine standing next to someone who is continuously chewing loudly, with the smell of their food or something you strongly dislike, their dirty hand touching the button or worse, their food falls on the floor. You would definitely be annoyed.

Do NOT use elevators in case of emergencies (fire, earthquake, etc.)

In case of emergencies like fire or earthquake, DO NOT use an elevator. Instead, it would be safer to use the stairs. Because when emergencies happen, the elevator’s system could short-circuit or fail which lead to passengers getting stuck inside. This situation is very dangerous and could be life-threatening.

Do NOT exceed the maximum capacity of the elevator

Every elevator is designed to have a certain capacity. The international standard is 575kg per person. For example, an elevator with 630kg capacity could only handle 8-9 people depending on their weight. Thus, when the overload alarm rings, you should wait for the following trip. You shouldn’t force it as it could affect the elevator’s longevity and especially endanger people.

Do NOT allow children to play in front of or around the elevator

Playing around or inside an elevator without the monitor of adults could cause children to get stuck inside a crack or the door.

Do NOT play football/pushing others into the door

Heavy impact on the landing door could be dangerous if it fell out of hinge when the elevator was on another floor (though unlikely in elevator made by large brands).

Refrain from spilling water inside the car cabin

If you spilled water inside a car cabin, it would cause the floor to be slippery and make you slip or even endanger other people. For example, if water spilled on the car operation panel, it could cause a short-circuit or failure and affect the performance of the elevator.
